The Story of Zulene Mayfield

Located in an affluent, majority white county, the city of Chester, Pennsylvania is mostly black and home to an unprecedented cluster of industrial polluting facilities. Trash & Burn follows one woman's decades long fight to stop the nation's largest trash incinerator from polluting her small town.

  • University of California, Berkley on May 23-24, 2024, (WeRISE Summit & Faculty Workshop)

    • Bilal will give a 15-minute presentation on environmental justice, including brief clips from his films "Midnight Oil" and "Trash & Burn"

    • Also, Bilal will attend the WeRISE Faculty Workshop on May 23, 2024, from 8 AM to 4 PM. The workshop, occurring a day before the WeRISE Summit, focuses on "Progressive Strides to Racial Healing" and aims to foster exchanges between Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty and the community. It will also explore integrating community-led initiatives into the curriculum to prepare for the new Environmental Engineering program launching in 2026.
